Why Imran Khan Imprisoned?

 Why Is Imran Khan Imprisoned?

1. Corruption & Bribery Allegations

  • He was convicted in a landmark corruption case involving land worth billions of rupees, allegedly obtained from tycoon Malik Riaz through the Al-Qadir Trust, in exchange for a financial settlement that disadvantaged Pakistan's national treasury by about £190 million. In this case, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison, while his wife, Bushra Bibi, also faced sentencing.

  • Under Pakistani law, because he faces multiple sentences, he is serving the longest one concurrently.

2. Toshakhana (State Gifts) Case

  • Initially sentenced to 3 years in August 2023 for selling cherished state gifts unlawfully, Khan’s conviction was eventually overturned, but successive Toshakhana-related cases persisted through 2024.

3. Cypher (State Secrets) Case

  • Khan and his ally Shah Mahmood Qureshi were handed 10 years in jail for alleged leaking of a classified diplomatic cable (“cypher case”) under the Official Secrets Act.

  • Portions of this conviction were later overturned or stayed, but the case remained one of several keeping him detained.

4. Iddat (Marriage Law) Case

  • Khan and his wife were sentenced to 7 years for entering marriage during the wife’s Iddat period—ruled unlawful—but this conviction was later overturned in July 2024.

5. May 2023 Riots Trials

  • Khan faces multiple terrorism-related charges in cases tied to the May 9 riots, in which his supporters attacked military and government sites his arrest.

  • On August 21, 2025, Pakistan’s Supreme Court granted him bail in eight of these cases—but he remains in jail due to his standing convictions and sentences in other cases.

  1. Imran Khan ko kai ilzamat lagayi gayi hain, jinmein se kuchh is prakaar hain:

    - Al-Qadir Trust case mein corruption ki ilzamat, jiske liye unhein 14 saal ki saza sunayi gayi hai.¹
    - Toshakhana case mein corruption ki ilzamat, jiske liye unhein 14 saal ki saza sunayi gayi thi, lekin ab unhein bail mil gayi hai.
    - Leaking state secrets ke liye 10 saal ki saza sunayi gayi thi, lekin ab unhein is case se bhi bari kar diya gaya hai.
    - Unlawful marriage ke liye 7 saal ki saza sunayi gayi thi, lekin ab unhein is case se bhi bari kar diya gaya hai.
In ilzamaton ke peeche Khan ke khilaf rajneetik sazish hone ki baat kahi ja rahi hai.
